Interview with Sarah Farlow following the HIF Agnes Water Surfing Festival

Surfing Updates

So Sarah, tell us a bit about yourself, where you’re from and how long you’ve been surfing for?

My love for surfing began as a 13 year old nipper in Tannum Sands surf lifesaving club where I soon realised that standing up on my nipper board was much more fun then lying down! Dad, also a keen surfer, was thrilled and took my younger brother and I out on a couple of his old surf boards and we were hooked! My family and I spent most of our weekends down at Agnes Water surfing, and became members of the local Tide and Turn boardriders club. I competed in the monthly competitions until I moved to the Gold Coast when I was 17 to study at University and I now work as a Physiotherapist here. I have been surfing for 15 years now and competing for 13 years. I love that surfing is something I can enjoy with my family and friends and that it promotes a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.

How many years have you been surfing the HIF Agnes Water surfing festival for and what is it that brings you back each year?

I have been surfing the HIF Agnes Water surfing festival for 6 years. I keep returning to this festival because it is always a fun weekend away, a great chance for me to surf with my family and to support and promote surfing in the local region.

What are your general routines, preparations and frame of mind you put yourself in prior to surfing a heat?

Prior to surfing a heat I usually go for a free surf to get used to the conditions each day. I also like to make sure I have done some stretching before paddling out, eaten a healthy breakfast and keep well hydrated during the day.

Who stood out for you most this year and could you tell us a bit about them based on your experience of surfing against them?

This year was the strongest competition I have seen, especially in the younger age groups. The standout performer for me was 11 year old Lilliana Bowrey (pictured below), who made walking up and down the longboard look effortless and graceful. She was very deserving of the win in the Open Women's Longboard division and will be one to watch in the future!
