Interview with Victorian Surfers Billy Harrison and India Robinson

Surfing Updates

Billy Harrison and India Robinson have both been selected as part of Team Australia to compete at this years ISA World Junior Surfing Championships being held in the Azores Islands, Portugal. We chatted briefly to Billy and India over email to get their thoughts on the event that begins September 17 2016.

Interview with Billy Harrison

Hi Billy, thanks for chatting with us today. What boards will you be taking with you (shaper, size, how many etc..)? I will be taking a 5'8, 18.1/8, 2.1/8 Al Merrick Rook 15; 5'9, 18.3/16, 2.1/8 Al Merrick Rook 15; 5'8 1/2, 18.3/16, 2.1/8 Al Merrick Rook 15; and a 6'0 Erik Arakawa.

How have you been preparing for the event? Have you been doing any specific training? I've been doing fitness training 3 times a week in Geelong with Brad Spicer and have been doing some coaching with Cahill bell-warren which both have really helped.

The ISA events are known to be long, taking up to 11 days to complete. How will your diet change to help you get through the whole event? I won't be changing much as I already eat pretty healthy diet but I might need to increase the calories as I go through the event.

Have you been to Portugal/Azores Islands before and are you looking forward to it? No I haven't been over there before, I haven't even been to Europe so I'm looking forward to going over there and seeing a new place. I've heard a lot about the Azores from other people and haven't heard anything bad about it so I'm really excited.

The wave where the competition is held is a peaky beach break. Do you think that you will have an advantage because you have grown up surfing similar waves at 13th Beach? Hopefully I will but I’ve heard the conditions can go from very good to very bad really quick so anything can happen.

Thanks Billy, and good luck at the event!

Interview with India Robinson

Hey India, thanks for your time today. What boards will you be taking with you (shaper, size, how many etc..)? I will be taking 5 boards, four of them are DHDs and one is a JS, i have two 5'7s a 5'6 a 5'5 and a half and a 5'4.

How have you been preparing for the event? Have you been doing any specific training? I have been doing lots of training and coaching with Adam Robertson and also Andy King from Surfing Australia. I have also been going to Keiser in Geelong, which is the gym that I train at.

The ISA events are known to be long, taking up to 11 days to complete. How will your diet change to help you get through the whole event? The food is very different overseas. It’s not like Australia where you can eat all the fresh fruits. I like to eat lots of fresh salads so hopefully I can find something like that in Portugal.

Have you been to Portugal/Azores Islands before and are you looking forward to it? No I haven't been to Portugal before but I'm really excited to go and surf over there.

The wave where the competition is held is a peaky beach break. Do you think that you will have an advantage because you have grown up surfing a similar beach break at Jan Juc? Yeah I think so, if it is like Jan Juc then ill be happy cause I've surfed Juc in every bad and good conditions.

Thanks India, and good luck at the event!
