Am I covered for maternity if my baby is premature and I'm still serving the waiting period?

The 12 month waiting period for obstetrics is based on your baby’s estimated due date; so if you join HIF and you fall pregnant a couple of months later, you’ll be covered for maternity as long as your “Estimated Date of Confinement” (due date) is beyond the date on which the 12 month waiting period has ended.

If you’re still serving the 12 month waiting period and your baby arrives prematurely though, please don’t worry. In those instances, we just require a letter from your doctor to confirm that your Estimated Date of Confinement was predicted to fall after the date on which your 12 month waiting period would be served in full, and that will ensure that you're still covered for private treatment and accommodation.
