What is a hospital excess?

An excess is the amount selected on a hospital insurance policy which the primary member agrees to pay for an overnight hospital stay before a benefit will be payable from HIF. Essentially, applying an excess now helps to reduce your premiums in the long-term, so if you're healthy and don't expect to need hospital treatment in the near future, applying an excess to your Hospital Cover is a smart choice.

Choose an optional excess with Gold and GoldStar Hospital Cover.
With our top two levels of cover, Gold and GoldStar, you can choose from a range of optional excesses in order to reduce your overall premiums.

For Gold, you may choose from:

  • $0 (no excess)
  • $100 per person to a max of $200 ($100/$200)
  • $200 per person to a max of $400 ($200/$400)
  • $400 per person to a max of $800 ($400/$800)

For GoldStar, you may choose from:

  • $0 (no excess)

Important, please note: Excesses only apply to overnight stays on our Gold and GoldStar Hospital products. Excesses do not apply for same-day surgery or for dependents under the age of 18. Excesses are paid once per-person per-admission, covered under the policy in a calendar year up to the maximum.

  • GoldStarter & GoldSaver - for both policies, a $200 excess applies per-person, per-admission to a maximum of $400 per year ($200/$400).
